16x^3-20x^2-60x-27 ------------------- 4x+3 Please help

OpenStudy (anonymous):

These are confusing I have been able to work out so of the problems but there are some that get me and I need help

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I tried to work out the top and then divide the bottom and that does not work

OpenStudy (amistre64):

4x^2 -8x -9 ----------------------- 4x+3| 16x^3 -20x^2 -60x -27 -12x^2 ------------------ -32x^2 -60x -27 +24x ----------- -36x -27 +27 ------ 0

OpenStudy (amistre64):

you know how you divide normal numbers right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

right

OpenStudy (amistre64):

4 <--- 3(4) = 12 ; remember to subtract 12 ----- 3|146 -12 ----- 26 <-- bring down to carry on 48 <--- 3(8) = 24 ; -24 ----- 3|146 -12 ----- 26 -24 ------ 2 <-- remainder

OpenStudy (anonymous):

This looks really complicated, compared to really division

OpenStudy (amistre64):

same concept; just with letters in it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

o ok I guess that is what makes it hard to me then

OpenStudy (amistre64):

4x times ____ = 16x^3? ; 4x^2 4x(4x^2) +3(4x^2) = 16x^3 +12x^2 16x^3 -20x^2 -(16x^3 +12x^2) 16x^3 - 20x^2 -16x^3 -12x^2 ------------------ 0 -32x^2 right?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

the letters really are just there to keep track of positions; but we can do it without them if its easier.. 4 -8 -9 --------------- 4+3 |16 -20 -60 -27 -16 -12 ---------- -32 -60 32 +24 --------- -36 -27 36 +27 ---------- 0 + 0
