Michael Behe proposed the idea that the flagellum was irreducibly complex and therefore could not have been the result of gradual evolutionary adaptation. His book was Darwin's Black Box (I think?). Lot's of people disagree with him. A partial flagellum mechanism seems to make a dandy harpoon. But - make up yer own mind on this one, ask teh google about behe flagellum controversy and Irreducible complexity
