unless we cross multiply the equation, so that it it becomes an equation where i have to find the √ of -20...

\[4x = 1/2 (x^2+8x-20)\] now distribute the 1/2.. \[4x = 1/2 x^2+4x-10\] now subtract 4x from both sides \[0 = 1/2 x^2-10\] now add 10 to both sides \[10 = 1/2x^2\] See what happened there? :) You should be able to fix it from here.
