Can somebody explain how to do this problem? Joe leaves in a car headed for North Carolina traveling at 63mph. 1.3 hours later, his friend heads out to chase him down and give him a suitcase he forgot. If the friend is traveling 71mph, it will take him ? hours to catch up with Joe. Round to the nearest tenth of an hour.

sure

OpenStudy (anonymous):

joe has gone 63*1.3=81.9 miles his rate is 63 mph so his distance will be 81.9 + 63 t where t is the time they meet. his friend is traveling at 71 mph so his distance will be 71t at the time they meet. they obviously meet at the same place so set these things equal and solve for t

\[81.9+63t=71t\] \[81.9=8t\] \[t=\frac{81.9}{8}=10.24\] rounded
