Joe leaves in a car headed for North Carolina traveling 63mph. 1.3 hours later, his friend heads out to chase him down and give him a suitcase he forgot. If the friend is traveling 71mph, it will take him? hours to catch up with Joe. Round to the nearest tenth. Could somebody explain how to do this problem, please?

So I will come up with two equation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Location of joe 63x+63*1.3 location of friend 71x set them equal to each other and solve for x

I'll try it...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That got the right answer, thank you...I was trying the equation 63(x+1.6)=71x...but was not coming up with the right answer...do you know what was wrong with my equation?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You are correct except for the simple mistake it is 1.3 not 1.6 as stated by the problem

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oops. :P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks anyway. :)
