The president at the time who was lyndo b johnson wanted to get involved and this incident was put in place and said that if the viet congs shoot any more sdouth vietnam bases, which were occupied by the American. They would go into war with vietnam. And the viet cong had shot and that is hopw the americans got involved in the vietnam war.
