if you want information about your site, then google analytics will be helpful. if you want information about sites that you don't own, then i would stick with alexa Traffic rank ( http://www.alexa.com/)

there are programmes designed by search engines which rank sites based on the number of clicks they receive. can be known by how Varadharajan mentioned.

You can write a custom program to do that or you can have server logs to find out the IP address and other details,For example.If you use CMS or Framework there are plugins which will do the work for you.

just look hw much time does it takes to enter a website..if it takes a lot of time ..than it may be used by alot of people.....
