solve: x/4-x/9=5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

First, we find the lcd of the fractions on the left hand side. In this case it is 36. We multiply the top and bottom of the fraction x/4 by 9. We multiply the second fraction (top and bottom) by 4. Now the left hand side looks like this: 9x-4x/36=5. This simplifies to 5x/36=5. We then multiply both sides by 36. Which gives us 5x=180. Then divide both sides by 5. Which gives us our answer x=36
