Davey built a bookshelf 36 inches long . Can the shelf hold a set of enclopedias if there are 24 books and each book averages 5/4 in. think ?Explain answer?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, if there are 24 books and each is 5/4 inches, then we need to find out how much total space the 24 books take up. First we multiply 24 times 5/4 to find the total space taken up by the books. When we multiply 24 time 5/4 we get 120/4 (we simply multiplied across). When we simplify this we get 30, that is 30 inches. Since the book shelf if 36 inches it seems that we can indeed hold a set of 24 books. With a little room left over.
