personally, i can never remember names and dates, but what I do love are the stories and i try to imagine what it must have been like and I am fastinated by certain parts of history. History was not any major for me, though.

Like Joz said its all in the stories. Once you are interested in the stories it becomes easier - also practice. The first time someone mentions some place like, I don't know, Roanoke (for American history) it won't mean much but after someone mentions it a couple of times it will start to stick. In reverse, since there seem to be a lot of people from India tuning in - lots of place names from there would not mean much to me. I would have no context so it would be harder for me to relate and remember those stories the first time through. But I could look up the places on a map, see what other stories involve that place and then it would start to make more sense.
