explain the relation between pert chart and gantt chart

Gantt chart was earlier used for cost estimation of projects(say industrial projects). It factors in the cost of local processes and adds them up to finally give the estimate of entire project. However, there was a drawback with gantt chart representation of the processes. It could not show simultaneous processes i.e. the processes which are carried out side-by-side in time or the overlapping processes. On the other hand methods like Critical Path Method(CPM) or Probabilistic Evaluation Review Technique(PERT) efficiently incorporate these processes also.
