An electronics store surveyed every 8th customer who came into the store for a week. Of the 380 people who responded, 185 people watched movies on VHS tapes. 251 people watched movies on DVDs. 72 people watched movies both on VHS tapes and DVDs. Create a Venn diagram to reflect the above data, label your diagram clearly. Use your diagram to answer the following questions here. i. Of those surveyed, how many watched only VHS tapes? ii. Of those surveyed, how many watched only DVDs? iii. Of those surveyed, how many watched VHS tapes or DVDs, but not both? iv. Of those surveyed, how ma

iv. Of those surveyed, how many watched VHS tapes or DVDs, or both?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you know how to draw it first off?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well you first make three circles

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and you link them

OpenStudy (anonymous):

just like the olympic rings

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Only two circles. One for VHS and one for DVD's. And yes, they overlap. And the overlapped region represents those that watch both DVDs and VHS

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Is the problem saying that 380 people responded to each one of the questions, because the responses add up to more than 380 people

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No. They add up to more than 380, because some of it overlaps. (i.e. the people there are some people who watch VHS (part of the 185 people) and some of those 185 people will also watch DVD's too. (part of the 72) so we will have overlapping people))

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok, then whats the problem? You simply draw the circles and place the information in the corrects place

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes. that is easy said than done for you. I know how to do the two ircle diagrams, but this one calls for the three circle diagram which i do not know how to do.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah.. but theres some calculations which i cant actually remember... for example, how would you find those that only watched VHS?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I haven't done this stuff for over 3-4 years :/ And I was never good with probability

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well join the club. lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The question asks, simply to draw a venn diagram that reflects the given data , so the venn diagram that corresponds to the data is a two circle diagram that intersects in them middle.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yep.. but to find the exact number of people that watch VHS only?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now to find the exact number of people who watched VHS, the answer is given in the problem, it says that 185 people responded and said that they ONLY watch VHS. The fact that 75 people said they watched VHS and DVD is irrelevant, because we are only looking for those that watched VHS.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so then would you subtract 75 from 185 then

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1. only vhs = 185-72=113 2.only dvd = 251-72=179

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so then what would be the rest.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3. 4. 113 + 179 +72 = 364

OpenStudy (anonymous):

where would i pu that into the circle

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the 4th one covers the whole venn dia.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so i would put 364 in the center of the diagram then

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then how would i enter it into the diagram then

OpenStudy (anonymous):

u there

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ya

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I--------------I I VHS I DVD I I _______________ I

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry could nt present the venn dia.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the circle covering only vhs not the overlapping segment = 113 and the one covering only dvd .....=179

OpenStudy (anonymous):

u can find the rectangle in the dia. its becuz there r few who neither watched movies on vhs tapes nor on dvds

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the answer 4 the 3rd Q 113 + 179 = 292

OpenStudy (anonymous):

try posting the diagram again

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If i 've gone wrong , plz forgive me becuz its been long since i 've learnt venn diagrams how should i post it ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do it as an attachment.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wheres the numbers for the diagram

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the red one goes to only vhs the green ....only only dvd

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what about the light blue

OpenStudy (anonymous):

red + green= 3rd Q ans red + green + blue = 4th....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i 'm not vry sure of 3rd and 4 th answer :(

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok thanks

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the answer for the 3rd Q can be 185+251-72=364 not sure :(

OpenStudy (anonymous):

here is a venn diagram

OpenStudy (anonymous):

only VHS 113 only DVD 179 one or the other but not both 113+179 = 292

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can't read the last question

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if it is not clear how i filled this out let me know
