easiest way to complete a square

OpenStudy (smurfy14):

x=10,-2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Add half of the b constant, squared.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

take a b term ( that's the one with 'x') divide by 2 and square it in your case -8x ----> (-8/2)^2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Remember what you add on one side, you also have to do same on other side

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I know, but that is factoring. I have to complete the square.

OpenStudy (smurfy14):

oh nvm

OpenStudy (smurfy14):

use this http://www.purplemath.com/modules/sqrquad.htm to show you how to complete the square

So you gotx^2-8x-20 right? So you do the (-8/2)^2 which is (-4^2) which is 16. -20+16=-4. So, te final is x^2-8x-4.
