NATO is the largest military organization outside UN formed in 1949, during the cold war era, when the western countries were aligning together to establish peace in the world. Some other smaller organizations also cropped up like SEATO and CENTO but later they merged with NATO. However Soviet countries saw this alignment of western bloc as a strategic move and themselves signed Warsaw Pact, for an organization with similar objectives as that of NATO. But Warsaw pact failed to become as popular as NATO and was later disbanded.

Nato was set up as a alliance of Western european and north american countries to deter an alleged possible invasion by the soveit union whose military fortunes had taken a turn for the better since the invasion of 1941and whose mite was a concern. The Warsaw Pact was a counter alliance by the soviet controlled bloc in eastern europe and the maintanence of it by the USSR, a controlled economy, it might be argued played a long term part in the fall of commnism in Russia and europe.
