Given a function f(x) and its derivative f'(x)... whats that mean? What's a derivative? What kind of maths is x axis's and line tangents?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

haven't you ever heard of calculus?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

been a long time...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so I need to study up on calculus then if I want to understand this thing about Newtons method?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Derivative is \[dy/dx\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thankyou for the formula, but actually don't know what it is, what does it mean?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it is differentiation of a function with respect to a variable.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Eg Y=f(x)=2x Dy/dx=f'(x)=2

you can open the following link and will find a pdf on introductory differrential calculus. you can study it. http://sydney.edu.au/stuserv/documents/maths_learning_centre/differentialcalculus.pdf

Sweet thankyou very much all! It is clear I need to go back and learn it again, I've really forgotten it all...
