Linux is an operating system not to be feared now a days......Os like Ubuntu are comparable to windows.....They can be run as a live OS without installing, or can be installed singly or alongside your windows, or even inside windows as a programme. They create a boot-load manager either grub (or lilo) while getting installed. when installed alongside windows, grub modify the Master boot record in primary partition which recognize the presence both OS and lets us choose to which OS we want to boot into. (ifwhat u meant are the files of Linux they are placed inside the root partition(/))
