A pole 6m high has a shadow 10m long when the shadow of a nearby building is 220m long. How tall is the building? The answer should be to the nearest tenth or as a whole number. x = m

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ans is 132m

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do u need working of this answer????

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes please

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I asked becoz u hv posted many similar questions... See at a certain position/time of sun, the shadows of various things is directly proportional to their height So this is a question of direct variation/proportion

OpenStudy (anonymous):

In case of direct variation x -- = constant y so x1 x2 -- = --- y1 y2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So if we represent the height of object by x and length of shadow by y, then x1 = 6 and x2 = ? y1 = 10 and y2 = 220 Using x1 x2 -- = --- y1 y2 6 x2 ------ = ------- 10 220

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so 6 x 220 x2 ------- = 10 6 x 22 = x2 132 = x2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Is it clear now???

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes
