Using the "Splitting the middle term", it can be written as x^2 -10 x + 8x - 80 = 0 x(x - 10) +8(x - 10) = 0 (x -10) (x+8) = 0 This is possible if either (x - 10) is zero or (x + 8) is zero If x - 10 = 0 means x = 10 If x + 8 = 0 means x = -8
