Newtons method reading... I am currently unable to understand the maths in this reading... has anyone else felt this and were you able to continue with the course without understanding it? Is this a major block? (I understand the idea of successive approximation, just not the maths in the reading...)

It's just about how to obtain formulas for computation. Anyway, what do you want? Do you need someone to help you understand the maths in Newton/Raphson method? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newton%27s_method I can't imaging moving forward without understanding a part of the course. If I don't understand something I just put it aside for a while but I come back to it later as many times as needed to reach understanding.

understanding the math is for the most part isn't necessary, it'll help you in a long term career but if your learning this as a hobby its not that big a deal, I can't think of any place this method is used in the assignments.
