OpenStudy (nilankshi):

what is endoplasmic reticulum

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Organelle that synthesises substances.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Also metabolises some substances.

Endoplasmic reticulum is a network within the cell. u can imagine it as many interconnecting pipes that span the cell throughout. These pipes are made up from infolding of membrane of nuclear envelope. This network has many functions in the cell, most importantly rough endoplasmic reticulum is lined by ribosomes which synthesize various proteins, these proteins can then trransported to various parts of the cell through the pipe. It is a faster way of transporting larger molecules than pulling it through the thicker cytoplasm. Smoothe endoplasmic reticulum has major function of synthesizing lipids and various steroids, including cholesterol. There are certain cells which transport certain proteins outside their body, a process called as secretion. Endoplasmic reticulum is also connected to other special form of tubes called golgi body. Once golgi body recieves these proteins from Endoplasmic reticulum, it sorts these proteins and then sends them outside by filling them into tiny membrane bound vesicles.

The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is a eukaryotic organelle that forms an interconnected network of tubules, vesicles, and cisternae within cells. Rough endoplasmic reticula synthesize proteins, while smooth endoplasmic reticula synthesize lipids and steroids, metabolize carbohydrates and steroids (but not lipids), and regulate calcium concentration, drug metabolism, and attachment of receptors on cell membrane proteins

Endoplasmic Reticulum The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is repsonible for the production of the protein and lipid components of most of the cell's organelles. The ER contains a great amount of folds - but the membrane forms a single sheet enclosing a single closed sac. This internal space is called the ER lumen. The ER is additionally responsible for moving proteins and other carbohydrates to the Golgi apparatus, to the plasma membrane, to the lysosomes, or wherever else needed. There are two types of ER - rough, which is coated with ribosomes, and smooth, which isn't. Rough ER is the site of protein synthesis. The smooth ER is where the vesicles carrying newly synthesized proteins (from the rough ER) are budded off.
