u can solve this using graph. |x-1| is a v-graph @ (1,0) while -|x-4|+3 is an inverted v-graph about point (4,3) . se wher they intersect, u'll get ur answer :)

nope, draw a rough graph, 2 perpendicular lines and marked with 1,2,3... along itself. always try approaching these kind of sums with graphical approach---the best proven method,rather than taking cases by opening the modulus :)
