@jayanthy.log: PHP,Python and ruby are open source standards for creating web application which has greater developers on the web.Its more secured and robust than .net and java. PHP =>MOst used language on the web,a lot successful framework are available like CAKE php,Codeigniter ,symphony etc.. A huge cms market on php like joomla,Drupal, wordpress. . Ruby =>Rails is great framework built on top of ruby, ruby is dynamically language.Rails is great framework. Python =>Dynamically typed language.Focuses on code readability and maintainablity.Google uses python extensively. There is a huge community around web.Django is most used python web framework.google app engine is inspired from django. I have a almost 1.5 years of experience in web,i started with PHP,right now I am settling in python. Still you can make your choice what suits, but Java and .net won't make you productive. . . Links you should look into: http://wiki.python.org/moin/LanguageComparisons http://rosettacode.org/wiki/Factorial and more.

Pretty sure Open Study uses Lift with Scala. Awesome Framework. Awesome Language. You should probably ditch Java for Scala anyways, at this point. Scala is a functional (though not pure), object oriented language that compiles to JVM, you can use your favourite java libraries with it. Ruby on Rails and Python with Django are also good choices.
