susie: divide both sides by -8, and since we divide by a negative we flip the inequality: x-3< (11/8)x-1 subtract x from both sides and add one to both sides: -2<(3/8)x multiply by 8/3 -16/3<x now in set builder notation the solution S is: S={x|x>-16/3} read S is the set of all x such that x is greater than -16/3

thanks that helps
