There is no magic wand to building a good vocabulary. It requires painstaking effort, as in any other field. What you should do is to read a lot of diverse material, and always keep a pen and paper ready with you when reading. When you come across a word whose meaning you do not accurately know, jot down the word in your list. Then open a new word document, that has three columns i.e the word, the meaning, and the pronunciation.

Keep building this document, and when there is a critical mass of words, start learning in reverse order, from the meaning to the word. The key is associating the meaning with the word. When we speak, it is the meaning that comes to mind first, unless the word is ingrained in our brain.

I have noticed often that in conversations, we use the meaning, but fail to find the right "aha" word for that meaning. For e.g if I say that "this is the outcome of his effort", I can use a nice word called "handiwork" instead.

Do this diligently, and unflaggingly and very soon, you will have a fantastic vocabulary, not just a static one, but one that you can actively use in your conversation or writing.

- Read voraciously and assiduously. As Rameshg said, note down new words and expressions and their meanings.
- Try to initially learn by heart and for the next few days try to build sentences using these words in your daily life. USING THEM WILL BREED FAMILIARITY.
- Initially buy the small OXFORD Dictionary and beginning from page 1, learn 3-4 new words everyday, make sentences with them and try to use in conversation. Diligence over 1-2 years will work wonders for you.

Read news papers daily , make a note of tough words and try to find out their meaning . Read " WORDPOWER" Try listening to english news or english fils (so that yu can get familiar with the accent as well ) Try out websites like : http://www.vocabulary.co.il/increase-vocabulary-html/ www.vocabulary.com P.S : practise whatever new word yu learn so that yu get used to it !
