a permanent magnet can be formed by keeping a magnetic substance in a solenoid or by hammering by keeping it in N-S direction

inside the metal before it is magnetized it has 'domains' pointing in every which direction. by bringing the metal near a magnet it aligns these domains (pointing them in the same direction) making it magnetized
