i was thinking of taking a course this summer in either java or php...but i'm not sure which ...can you guys give an advice which one to choose and why??

I seriously recommend .Python =>Web as well as system programming +Mobile. . .

Java over php for sure. PHP is very handy to know as it's very easy to get started, but in terms of overall usefulness and how applicable it will be to other languages, PHP is the pits.

Java will be more useful, and PHP is not as common any more (although it still is popular, just not as popular.) If you don't know HTML, I would actually start with that.

It all depends on what you wanna develop for. Learn PHP if you wanna focus on the web.
