what is the answer to 5/8 + 1/4 = ?/8 + ?/8 = ?/?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5/8 + 2/8 = 7/8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

please explain how and thanks for your answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well you want the denominators to be the same in order to add the numerators. for this you must find the least common deominator. in this case that is 8 (8 and 4 have the least common denominator of 8)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

from there you realize that you must multiply 4 by the number 2 in order to get the denominator to be 8. if you multiply the bottom you msut multiply the top, thus you will get 2/8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

from here you can simply add numerators which in turn will result in 5/8 plus 2/8 which is 7/8

thanks so much! your a life saver

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hopefully that makes sense. good luck

thank u
