According to the Americans with Disabilities Act, enacted in 1990, the slope of a wheelchair ramp must be less than 1/12 and there must be a minimum 5-by-5 ft landing for every 2.5 ft of rise. These dimensions were chosen to accommodate handicapped people who face physical barriers in public buildings and at work. An architect has submitted the orthographic plan shown below. Does the plan meet the requirements of the act? What will be the ramp’s angle of ascent?

Plan does not meet regulations based on slope. The slope is rise over run 1.5/25 which is greater than 1/12. The slope should be 1/12 or less.

Angle of ascent can be determined. Find angle theta which is opposite side 1.5 and adjacent side 25.
