communism: idea that everyone works for the community and that the community provides everyone enough to live. never realised.
socialism: thought as a preform of communism. all production facilities became state property, there were exact economic plans which goods to produce and who had to do what. most often ended in economic failure and dictatorship. realised for example in the soviet union.

Communism is a system of government, and general domestic policy. Socialism is economic.
