The outbreak of WWI. The major powers, Austria and Russia all had conflicting interests in the balkans, Germany as a close ally of Austria Hungary was drawn into this and as such France also an ally of Russia was also magnetised towards the area. Austrian demands upon Serbia after the assassination of Franz Ferdinand and consequent declaration of war was the lighted fuse that led to the greater conflict ineurope from 1914-18
