Imelda Marcos has 724 pairs of shoes, 10 pairs of pants, and 10 blouses. If you draw a tree diagram with her choices for blouses on the left, then for each blouse her choices of shoes, then for each pair of shoes her choices of pants, how many "leaves" will be on the right side of the tree? A. 724 B. 744 C. 72,400 D. 7,240 E. 10
What do ya think?
well im not really good at this whole math thing so i discussed it with my cousin and we just said B. i dont know how but yeah
Don't guess.. Think about it for a second. You are asked to draw a tree with 1 branch for each pair of blouses... So how many blouses were there?
Err each blouse, not pair of blouses , sorry.
10?
Right. Now on each of those blouse 'branches' you have to draw another branch for the number of pairs of shoes
hi guys ! i think 72400
So how many shoe 'branches' will 1 blouse branch have, and
that's great ducth.. Now if only this was your homework, instead of hers....
aha wait keep on talking me through this, im glad i got the answer but i wanna know so continue please:)
So how many shoes did she have?
we have 10 blouse so we get 10 choises multiplies 724 pairs of shoes *10 choises for pants
well dont i have to divide 724 by 10?
No, because each blouse branch will have a branch for each shoe option.
So if I pick the blue blouse branch (for example) I still have the choice of all 724 pairs of shoes.
im so sorry im just completely lost i dont understand this, idk how to find out what to do next
You're doing very well. Just think for a moment
If all your shirts matched any of your shoes and pants... We're trying to figure out how many possible outfits you can make.
That's the motivation here. So if you pick 1 of your 10 shirts, you then have to pick a pair of shoes. How many shoes do you have? 724 right?
yes right, 724 pairs
Ok, so if each of your 10 shirts has the same 724 shoe options, how many different combinations of those can you make?
If you have 10 boxes of doughnuts, and each box has 724 doughnuts inside, how many doughnuts do you have total?
7240? right?
Right. It's the same principle with the shirt/shoes. You have 10 shirts. Each one has the option of being worn with 724 different shoes. How many different shirt/shoe combinations do you have?
ahhh this is where i get confus..ummm
its the same answer right? 7240?
Same deal. Each of your 10 (boxes/possible shirts) has 724 (doughnuts/possible shoes). How many total (doughnuts in boxes/possible shirt-shoes) do you have?
Yeah 7240. So then we talk about with each of those 7240 shirt/shoe combinations we have the option of wearing 10 different pants
So how many total different shirt/shoe/pant options do we have?
wait, i'd have to multiply another ten for the pants right? so its 72400
Right. each one of your shirt/shoe combinations has 10 options for pants. So you have 7240 shirt/shoe combinations and each one has 10 pants options, so there's 7240*10 shirt/shoe/pant combinations.
i understand it now thank you very mucho :)
Don't think that this stuff is hard. It's not. It just takes a little bit of thinking, and sometimes a bit of insight. You can do it if you try. =)
well since you put it that way now i can use your strategy more often, that strategy wuld be to think about it before guessing haha thanks
