OpenStudy (anonymous):

the first proofs for settlements and agriculture found are dated to about 2000 B.C. around 900 B.C. the settlements spread out and trade between them was established, around 500 B.C. there were real buildings and the first stone temples. the big mayan centres were established around 400 B.C.

OpenStudy (matthewrlee):

Like most people they settled when they came to the conclusion that their expectations were too high. They had to make a choice. Either keep holding out for something else or settle for what was right in front of them. So they settled. Eventually they realized they made the right decision, but it was a difficult choice.
