USSR broke up because of the tight control Moscow had over the other countries like Ukraine etc...

Also, Mikhail Gorbachev's policies like Glasnost and Perestroika encouraged liberalism and thus led to nations declaring independence.

The economic stagnation of the USSR also resulted in the loss in popularity of communism in USSR.

The cold war proved to be too much of a burden on the USSR...

U didn't get along with R and SS was caught in the middle. It was time to end the relationship. It's difficult to accept, but some letter combinations just don't work out.
