A rectangular field is enclosed on 3 sides by a fence, while the 4th side is a stream. The fence opposite the stream is 9 m longer than the other sides. If the area of the field is 70 m2, find its dimensions.

side* (side + 9) = 70 let side = x x^2 + 9x - 70 = 0. solve the equation - the soln for x = 5. this means that the dimensions are 5m * 14m.
