In the sequence, 8, 11, 14, 17,..., what is the common difference? A. 8 B. 9 C. 6 D. 3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

why don't you try finding the common difference. what is the difference between 8 and 11? what is the difference between 11 and 14 what is the difference between 14 and 17?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

8 is smaller then 11 11 is smaller then 14 14 is greater then 17?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

20. It's + 3 each time.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

right, but when we say difference in mathematics, we mean the difference in magnitude. for example the difference between 15 and 20 is 5. we say this because if you add 5 to 15, you get 20, so the difference between these two numbers is 5.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Your answer is 3. D.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OOOOH thanks i get now :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so basically 11 is 3 numbers away from 8 and 14 is 3 numbers away from 11 and so on. so the difference is 3.

you are welcome :)
