The first colony in Virginia was Jamestown, Virginia.

Roanoke Island was the first attempt at a permanent English settlement in the Virginia colony... it became known as the Lost Colony after its people - including the first European child born in the colony (Virginia Dare) vanished while its leader John White was attempting to get supplies for the colony in England - upon his return (delayed by hostilities between England and Spain) all that was found was the word "Croatoan" carved on a post in the dismantled remains of the fort/village. Due to an impending hurricane, White was forced to leave without a search for the settlers. Their fate is still debated.
