What is the author trying to achieve within a short story? How is that intention expressed within the text? The elements chosen within any given story are chosen to highlight a particular viewpoint. This is especially important within short stories as the author has far fewer words to play with. A short story author must create and resolve conflict in a short amount of time. Every character, conflict and event will have to be chosen specifically in order to set up the conflict (be it in the character, a place, or any other form), make the author care about the situation and then resolve it, even if that resolution is a negative one.
