Do you think that humans have discovered the idea of a number or did we invent the concept of numbers?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

i believe we defined a way to communicate to others in an intelligent manner what we mean by how many and mow much and how long its been.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the concept of numbers was invented you discover something that was present but not known that is why there were different number systems used in ancient times now the present system is being taught all over the world as "standard" maths

OpenStudy (anonymous):

we invented a repeatable method to convey the concept of numbers to others

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think it was the babylonians had a system based on 60

OpenStudy (anonymous):

amazing

OpenStudy (amistre64):

the romans had a system based on XL :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh yes - imagine doing arithmetic in roman numbers!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I know some tribes use base 6 on their hands using fingers then touching there wrists and minus numbers were a lot later because think of it from a shepards point of view it is impossible to have negative amounts of sheep except for lowning I guess

This is such an interesting question I think, I believe that numbers are totally man made things but who knows for sure :-)
