The area of American history that is really interesting is the Civil War (1861-65) It looks like a noble fight between the good non slave owning north against the bad slave owning south. The north with its messiah like savior of black slaves in the south , Abraham Lincoln with a wish to make all men equal. Look again! It is far more than this. The slave issue was not a humanitarian one it was a commercial issue which irritated northern business due to the unfairness of having to pay for skilled labor there against the work for no pay regime upheld on southern plantations. Mr Lincoln had his issues too. He was reported to have said that he did not care if any slave was not set free as long as the union prevailed. The war archives in picture and words show that as usual it was the avaricious wishes of the powerful and wealthy fought out on the battlefields of Antietam and Shiloh to the inglorious death by the boys of ordinary families from Tennessee and Maine. This story is one of the greatest and most interesting in all world history. And no I am not an American.
