3/5 - 3/12 = ? You always have to find a common denominator. Easiest way to do that is to multiply the denominators. 5 x 12 = 60 Remember, what ever you do to the bottom, you have to do to the top. Now, you change youre fractions. 3/5 becomes 36/60 (you multiplied 5 by 12 to get 60, so you have to multiply 3 by 12 too) Same with 3/12 3/12 becomes 15/60 (12 was multiplied by 5, so three is multiplied by 5). Now, SUBTRACT the numerators! YAY 36/60 - 15/60 = 21/60
