I 3x + 7 I = - I 8x -2I Can somebody explain why my answer key says, that there is no solution to this equation?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

because absolute value cannot be negative

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Refering to the negative 2 inside the symbols, or the negative sign outside them?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the equation means that the absolute value on the LHS must equal the negative of absolute value on the RHS. but since absolute values cannot be negative, it is impossible for the LHS to be equal to RHS

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(but you need to check for 0, as the absolute value of 0 is 0)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks, lightbulb came on. :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes, andras, but the values of x that make the LHS and RHS 0 are different. so that cannot be a solution
