Amy travels 27.5 miles to get to work by car. The first part of her trip on a country round averages 35 mph, while the 2nd part on a highway averages 48 mph. If the time she travels on the highway is 5 times the amount of time she travels on the country road, what is the total time for the trip?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Let x = time on country road, so 5x = time on highway. Distance = 27.5 miles = Speed x Time = (35)(x) + (48)(5x) = 275x Dividing by 275 gives x = 0.1 hours = 6 minutes Total time for the trip = 6x = 36 minutes
