Flashcards (index cards) work best for me! Especially for word definitions or greek roots.

if you want to memorize large text you may use mnemotechnics. For example you create vivid images for each word or idea and then try to mix these images in strange way so that you can't forget them

Use mnemonics.. I recommend memrise.com, especially for language learning aid. but can be used for other subjects to create or see other peoples mnemonics
