here is the same again.... Acidity Level Acid rain is rain that measures acidic on a pH scale. Anything below a 7 on the pH scale is considered acidic, while anything above a 7 is considered alkaline. While rainfall may naturally contain elements that make the water acidic or alkaline, true acid rain can be severely damaging, especially when it reaches levels that are below 5 on the pH scale. Degree of Exposure The degree of damage to tomato plants as a result of acid rain depends on how acidic the rain is, and how often the plants are exposed to the acid rain. You can test the pH levels of your rainfall by purchasing litmus paper at a garden supply center. Testing your rain regularly will let you know how often and how much acidity your tomato plants are being subjected to. Effects Acid rain can affect the soil conditions of the tomato plants. Continued exposure to acid rain, particularly below a 5 on the pH scale, can severely damage your tomato plants and stunt their growth. Acid rain causes certain microbes in the soil to die, as they cannot tolerate the high acidity levels of the soil. Acid rain can also leach away necessary nutrients in the soil, creating damaged or poorly fed plants.
