I want to set up a simple CCTV system at home. I'm planning to install it at my front door. Can you give me an idea what kind of system should I use? Please bear in mind that I'm financially limited. Just want to set up a simple system.

Check out Zoneminder for software. http://www.zoneminder.com/ I would suggest for cameras that you spend some time researching. There are many different types and a large range of image qualities.

But, im a windows OS user. I have a hard time using Linux. =)

Ah okay. Have you tried Ubuntu? It is pretty easy to use, I think you may be able to figure out how to use it quickly. I was thinking Zoneminder might be a good option because it is free and will save you a lot of money. By the way, are you planning to use it just to know who is at your door, or are you wanting to be able to prosecute if somebody breaks in?

I've tried Ubuntu before. And installing softwares/applications can really be tough for me. It needs to be compiled and I have to use command lines to execute this. Yes, I need it for catching the wrong doers. So, I need it to be recorded.

@maldita1182:You can use command line "apt-get" or synpatic package manager or software manager. You have all ways to install an app, even you can download .deb file and you can try installing which is like clicking on .exe level.I agree most beginners doesn't know all this, but if you are interested there are lot of ppl ready to help you to use GNU/Linux .

I see, frankly, I like the ubuntu interface better than windows. But, with those longhand methods of doing things esp. installing applications is a setback for me. Is it possible that I can have two OS running in one laptop? My unit is an Acer aspire 47367z. If it's possible, then can you tell me how to do this?

In response to saying you want to catch wrongdoers... You will want to buy a decent camera (not the cheapest). When you go to prosecute, the court may throw out the evidence if the camera picture is not clear enough. Keep that in mind when you are looking at options.

If im going to use a wireless IP camera, it means i dont need to connect it to a LAN cable right? It's going to use my wifi connection to transmit images..
