Acid rain affects populations by harming certain species. Species that live in the water and those that depend on water sources for survival are especially prone to harm by acid rain. Even flora that take in water from streams and rivers are affected by lower levels of pH.

Community predation is drastically affected by acid rain, as the low pH kills some species, leaving less prey for the species higher up in the food chain. This causes instability in interspecies interactions.

Acid rain affects ecosystems by increasing the acidity in water bodies, thus decreasing the populations of fish and aquatic life in the ecosystems. Also, some species may not be tolerant to low pH levels, and might decrease in population, thus affecting the food chains.

The biosphere is the least affected by acid rain in a particular area, but can be affected if acid rain spreads across various ecosystems. Even small declines in populations have dramatic effects on the biosphere, causing great instability within the food chains, killing many species in aquatic systems, and harming many of the flora through water intake. Damage to the flora population has further effects on the environment as far as the gas ratio, which eventually affects the populations themselves.
