Volatile memory of computer which holds all the currently running processes as well as the related data (depending upon size of RAM). It is volatile because the data held by it is lost, once the computer is switched off.
It is the live memory of your computer, made of semi-conductor, and way faster than the permanent memory( Hard Disk). But it is costlier than secondary storage devices.
About the name "Random Access"- modern RAMs no more access data randomly, instead in bursts of data. But the name still continues to be in use.
