Does anyone know what a good delta x would be to compute a simple derivative numerically using a computer? i.e. excel, or using a programming language such as c#?

Start with something reasonable looking for your problem, then keep halving the step size until the error is within some bounds (set by you). Accuracy is proportional to square of step size.
