OpenStudy (matthewrlee):

Is it acceptable to claim that some cultures are more developed and more beneficial than other cultures? If not why not? No one is asking me this question. I'm asking you.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Is it possible to say that certain cultures are more developed: Yes Are the cultures that are more developed more beneficial: That's more complicated. It depends on what your looking at as beneficial. If your looking at the average life expectancy, infant birth/death rate, level of poverty, level of hunger, and other things that people generally consider to be beneficial: Then I would have to say that yes, as a general rule, more developed cultures tend to be more beneficial. But if you look at something less concrete, say how happy individuals are, or other things that are VERY difficult to measure, then it's a lot harder to say. I think that, for any meaningful, useful, and reliably measurable definition of beneficial, then a more developed culture is more beneficial.
