how do you correct to 2 significant figures?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The second number from the beginning of the number is the second signinficant number. e.g 39856 The second significant figure is 9 However if the number starts with zeros e.g 0.00345 Then the second significant figure is 4. The zeros in the beginning of a number are not classed as significant. Hope this helps

so if i am asked to correct 4987 to 2 significant figures, the answer is 9 rite?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no correcting to 2 significant figures, you will have to look at the number after 9, since it is 8, which is greater than 5, you have to round the 9 up but it is in its highest form so you round the 4 up. so 4987 correct to 2 sig fig is 5000
